In this article we highlight SDCC’s collaborative artist Dr. Linda Lungren who is not only an accomplished pianist accompanying our rehearsals and performances, but is also our Composer-in-Residence. Over the years, our various choirs have performed roughly a dozen works by Dr. Lungren, and her output doesn't seem to be slowing! Most recently, Premier Choir featured Embrace Hope at our Spring Concert May 2021. SDCC’s Intermediate, Apprentice and Preparatory Choirs have all performed one of her songs during the 2020-2021 season as well.
Artistic Director Ruthie Millgard shared, “Linda's compositions, often with contributions by her brother David, are touching and poignant. Some are delicate and graceful, while others are jaunty and playful. It is a magical experience for our choristers to have the opportunity to work with the composer of one of their songs. They learn firsthand the inspiration behind lyrics, or a description of the emotion and intention behind the accompaniment.”
Dr. Lungren's contributions to SDCC are not limited to written compositions however. As an accompanist and music educator with decades of experience, she contributes to an enhanced choral rehearsal, working creatively in collaboration with the director with improvised additions to activities, and by contributing as a co-teacher or substitute teacher when the opportunity arises.
Music Director Margie Orem added, “Linda's teaching experience gives her a unique perspective of what engages, delights and motivates children to learn the songs and the life lessons they often highlight. She also knows the various abilities at each level making learning her compositions a gratifying and successful experience for both the singer and the audience.”
Dr. Lungren has faithfully contributed her talent and expertise to the San Diego Children’s Choir for more than 10 years and is a valued member of our SDCC family.
