Our Youth Chorale is a new mixed voice ensemble with the San Diego Children’s Choir starting Fall 2023. It is a place for those in grades 8-12, with all levels of music reading experience, who are interested in minimal commitment outside of rehearsal. Choristers perform in 4-8 local concerts each season.

Weekly Rehearsal Schedule and Location

Meets one time a week from September 2 through December 8, 2024 for the Fall Semester and January 26 through June 8, 2025 for the Spring Semester at the following location:

NOTE FOR NEW STUDENTS SPRING 2025: For students enrolling for the first time with little or no previous music reading instruction, we strongly recommend signing up for the winter music reading intensive. Because most students participate in choir for the full academic year, this class is helpful in ensuring that your child will feel prepared when rehearsals begin.

Curriculum

  • Weekly rehearsals consist of 20-40 students

  • Choristers sing independently in up to 4 parts in multiple languages and styles

  • Individual music literacy growth is emphasized in rehearsal. Choristers progress through published, sequential music literacy workbook series, Music Theory for Singers. They also use Sightreading Factory as an online aural literacy training tool and learn healthy vocal training

  • Youth take on elected roles to further develop leadership and independence both in and out of the Choir program

  • Small Group Vocal Coaching (optional)

Performances and other events

  • Two major SDCC concerts per year (Winter and Spring)

  • 2-4 additional performances per semester

  • A placement audition is required, but all music experience levels welcome

  • Must be able to match and repeat pitches and rhythms, be competent English readers and function comfortably in the group rehearsal environment
